We will continue to add renders, concepts, screenshots, and basic information on the role that each unit and building will have in the game in the months ahead so keep in touch as we add information. <p><em><strong> It&#8217;s been the busiest month for Halo Wars news in quite some time. The GamePro article came out with a great deal of information and they&#8217;ve posted a ton of it on their website. It&#8217;s not over though folks, E3 is less than a month away, coming up in mid-July. Halo Wars will be there, a year further along this time. The <a href="http://www.halowars.com/news/articles/archive/2008/06/20/Halo-Wars-Monthly-Update-06.20.08.aspx">latest monthly update</a> covers this upcoming event, and more: </strong></em></p>
<p><em><strong><span style="color: #ffffff;">&#8220;We will certainly update our website, as we did last year, with some E3 materials, links to announcements, articles, and any other information that comes from the show.</span></strong></em></p>
<p><em><strong><span style="color: #ffffff;">What are we going to be showing? We’re going to be showing a recent build of the game. We have a milestone that is shortly before E3, so we’re going to take a few days to test it and make sure it’s running well, then take it to LA. A lot more of the game will be visible and hopefully we will be able to hand over the controller to let people try it for themselves.&#8221;</span></strong></em></p>

Cheers fellas!</strong></em></p>
<p><em><strong><span style="color: #ffffff;"><strong>&#8220;Tom: We saw Mr. Devine giving a walk through of Halo Wars at E3 2007, where he talked about the warthog and that it was quite challenging to get the Fishtail physics right. Have any other vehicles proven to be as, if not more, challenging to get the correct feel perfect?</strong></span></strong></em></p>
<p><em><strong>Graham: They all have their challenges, not only with movement but getting the look and the sound right. I think the Warthog was a particular challenge because it is a distinct iconic vehicle from Halo, and the first one that we concentrated on to get it right. The Scarab from that particular demo needed a lot of love to get its movement looking good, and it will continue to need polish. Everything is harder the first time you go for the gusto and then gets progressively easier as you get the tools and procedures refined.&#8221;</strong></em></p>

<p><em><strong>As many of you will likely remember, last year we showed Halo Wars for the very first time to the press at E3.  We showed a small level, a UNSC base, some units from the game battling each other, and all that sort of good stuff to give everyone an idea of where we were taking Halo Wars.  We&#8217;ve had another year to work on the game and it&#8217;s been coming along really well.  IGN has posted their <a href="http://games.ign.com/articles/880/880004p1.html" target="_blank">Big E3 List</a> of games that will be at the 2008 show, which includes Halo Wars.  So please do keep an eye out for more information on the game coming out of the show in July.</strong></em></p>

The M9 hight-explosive, dule-purpose gernade is a thrown fragmentaion device. Use it to surppress or disable vehicles, exept tank. It can be thrown, rolled, bounched, ro ricoheted into places direct fire weapons can&#8217;t reach. Increase the angle of the throw to toss ot further, or to get it over obstacles. Be careful not to throw it too close to your own location.</strong></em></span></p>
<p><em><strong><span style="text-decoration: underline;">M6D Pistol</span><br />
This pistol is a recoil-operated magazien-fed handgun. It is issued with a smart-linked scope capable fo a 2x magnification. It fires 12.7 mm semi-armor piercing. High explosive round. It can shoot either semi-automated of automatic fire.</strong></em></p>
<p><em><strong><span style="text-decoration: underline;">MA5B Assault Rifle</span><br />
This rifle is a gas-operated and magazien-fed. It fires 7.62 armor-piercing rounds.Rate of fire is limitedby a soilder&#8217;s ability to aim, fire and chane magazines, shoot, controlled burts are more accurate than a fully automated fire.</strong></em></p>
<p><em><strong>The MA5B&#8217;s intergrated computer display rounds left in the magazine and the relative direction of the gas giant. Treshold for the point of reference, this feature is a particualarly usefu for orienting you in areas where it&#8217;s easy to get turned around and lose your sense of directionl.</strong></em></p>
<p><em><strong><span style="text-decoration: underline;">BR55 Rifle</span><br />
Battle Rifle fires 9.5mm rounds from 36-round magazine. Mounted with a 2X optical scope for targeting. Fires in short, automatic bursts of three rounds. Very accurate, relatively high rate of fire makes it a useful all-around infantry weapon.</strong></em></p>
<p><em><strong><span style="text-decoration: underline;">M7/Caseless Sub Machine Gun</span> (SMG) (dual wield)<br />
“Bullet hose” fires sustained burst of 5mm fire from 60-round magazine. SMGs, while not accurate over long distances, can provide withering fire at close quarters. Tends to “walk” upwards as compounding momentum from recoil takes hold. Therefore, careful moderation of aim required to maintain accuracy.</strong></em></p>
<p><em><strong><span style="text-decoration: underline;">M90 Shotgun</span><br />
The shotgun is a pump-action, magazine-fed (dual tubular non-detachable type) weapon. It fires 8 gauge magnum (305&#8243;) rounds. This weapon is very effective against targets at close range and many be used tp engage several targets simultaneouslyat medium and long range</strong></em></p>
<p><em><strong><span style="text-decoration: underline;">S2 AM Sniper Rifle</span><br />
This rifle is a gas-operated magazine-fed weapon. It is issued with a smart-link scope with two levels of magnification, it can socpe in on 2x or 10x. Also while still in zoom you can engage in nightvision. It fires 14.5mm armor-piercing fin-stabilized discarding-sabot rounds.</strong></em></p>
<p><em><strong><span style="text-decoration: underline;">M19 SSM Rocket Launcher</span><br />
The M19 SSM Rocket Launcher is a man-portable and shoulder-fire rocket launcher. It has two major components, the launcher and the magazine. The magazine contains two 102mm sharped-charged, high explosive rockets. It is designed for fast, easy detachment from the launcher. The launcher contains the sighting and a zoom of 2x and fire control systems.</strong></em></p>
<p><em><strong><span style="text-decoration: underline;">MA9A Assault Rifle</span><br />
the MA9A, an assualt rifle that with a press of a button and a simple extention of the barrel, it is either a Battle rifle or a sniper rifle. Now the scopes would be carried as grenades are, so you elimenate two grenade spots by carrying this weapon but HEY you have a nice every range weapon with a cost effective body.<br />

We were able to take all the best aspects of RTS games, make them work perfectly on the Xbox 360, and exclude the rest.</strong></em></dd>

UN forces defeated Koslovic and Frieden forces on Earth, then began a systematic and dedicated drive to crush their remnants on the various planets they held throughout the system. At the conclusion of these brushfire conflicts, Frieden and Koslovic forces were defeated in the face of a massive, unified and very powerful UN military.</strong></em> </dd>

<dd><em><strong>A unified Earth government was formed in the wake of these conflicts. Now, the victors were forced to deal with a less obvious but equally serious threat: overpopulation and a massive military that had no enemy to fight.</strong></em><em><strong>In the postwar period there were massive population surges and the overpopulation, coupled with the destruction and famine bred by the Rain Forest Wars, threatened to destabilize the economy.</strong></em> </dd>

<dt><em><strong>Faster Than Light:</strong></em></dt>
<dd><em><strong>A team of researchers, physicists, and mathematicians working in secret developed the Shaw-Fujikawa Translight Engine, a practical means of propelling spacecraft across vast interstellar distances. This new engine allowed ships to tunnel into &#8220;the Slipstream&#8221; (also called &#8220;Slipspace&#8221;). Slipspace is a domain with alternate physical laws, allowing faster-than-light travel without relativistic side-effects. Faster-than-light travel is not instantaneous; &#8220;short&#8221; jumps routinely take up to two months, and &#8220;long&#8221; jumps can last six months or more.</strong></em><em><strong>The SFTE generated a resonance field, which when coupled with the unusual physics of the Slipstream, allowed for dramatically shorter transit times between stars; however, scientists noted an odd &#8220;flexibility&#8221; to temporal flow while inside the Slipstream. Though no human scientist is sure why travel time between stars is not constant, many theorize that there are &#8220;eddies&#8221; or &#8220;currents&#8221; within the Slipstream—there is generally a five to ten percent variance in travel times between stars. This temporal inconsistency has given military tacticians and strategists fits—hampering many coordinated attacks.</strong></em> </dd>

Conditions on Earth had deteriorated in the face of overpopulation, so hitching a ride <img src="http://www.halowars.com/images/timeline/timeline003.jpg" align="left" height="111" width="235" />out to a colony became an attractive option.</strong></em><em><strong>Each colony ship was assigned military personnel and escort ships to help better utilize the massive (and expensive) standing fleets that, in the collapse of armed dissent, were soaking up a great deal of funding and resources.</strong></em><em><strong>Because FTL travel in this period was still fairly new and expensive, colonists and military personnel faced a stringent regimen of physical and mental testing. In theory, only the best-qualified citizens and soldiers were allowed to colonize &#8220;nearby&#8221; worlds. This was the birth of the Inner Colonies.</strong></em> </dd>

<dt><em><strong>The Odyssey:</strong></em></dt>
<dd><em><strong>The Odyssey launched on January 1, 2362. The lead ship in a fleet of colony vessels, the Odyssey—laden with troops and terraforming gear—spearheaded the colonization of a new world. This sparked the first wave of human expansion beyond the confines of the Solar System.</strong></em> </dd>

Outward expansion continued, and the Inner Colonies become a political and economic stronghold, though they relied heavily on raw materials supplied by the Outer Colonies.</strong></em><em><strong><img src="http://www.halowars.com/images/timeline/timeline009.jpg" align="right" height="138" hspace="20" width="234" />During this period, the planet Reach (orbiting Epsilon Eridani, right on Earth&#8217;s metaphorical doorstep) became the UNSC&#8217;s primary Naval yard and training academy. Reach was a major producer of warships and colony vessels, as well as a training ground for covert operatives and Special Forces.</strong></em> </dd>

<dd><em><strong>Sent by the Colonial Military Administration to investigate the loss of contact with Harvest, the scout ship Argo arrived in-system on 20 April. Other than a brief transmission to confirm their exit Slipstream position no further reports were made.</strong></em> </dd>

<dd><em><strong>Fleet Command assembled a battlegroup to investigate and they enter the Harvest system on 7 October.  The battlegroup consisted of the destroyer Heracles, commanded by Captain Veredi, as well as the frigates Arabia and Vostok.</strong></em><em><strong>They discovered drastic changes to the planet Harvest’s surface and no sign of the three million colonists.  An alien ship was detected in orbit.  The ship did not attack until Captain Veredi tried to initiate communications.  They responded by broadcasting the following message in the clear, in our own language: “Your destruction is the will of the Gods…and we are their instrument.?</strong></em><em><strong>The Vostok and Arabia were lost with all hands while the Heracles jumped out of the system, but took several weeks to return to Reach due to damage sustained in the battle. </strong></em> </dd>

<dt><em><strong>November 1, War: </strong></em></dt>
<dd><em><strong>The UNSC is placed on full alert.  Vice Admiral Preston Cole is mobilizing the largest fleet action in human history to retake the Harvest System and confront this new threat.</strong></em><em><strong>The Spartan II program is accelerated to help deal with the new Covenant threat. </strong></em> </dd>

<h1><em><strong>2531</strong></em></h1>

<dt><em><strong>The Battle of Harvest: </strong></em></dt>
<dd><em><strong>Admiral Cole&#8217;s war fleet engages the alien warship responsible for the decimation of the colony, scoring a victory (though the battle cost Cole two-thirds of his battle group). Only a last minute tactical inspiration turned the tide of battle. After returning to Earth, Cole-promoted to Admiral-learns that a number of outlying colonies have been destroyed, leaving behind no survivors. Cole begins to move his fleet around, trying to intercept the invaders. Ground and ship-to-ship battles begin in earnest, raging throughout the Outer Colonies. During one ground engagement, Human forces capture one of the aliens. Before succumbing to his wounds, interrogators learn that the aliens refer to themselves as &#8220;the Covenant&#8221; (roughly translated).</strong></em> </dd>

<dd><em><strong>Over the next four years, Cole&#8217;s forces were hammered, despite his excellent leadership and tactical brilliance. It was simply a matter of being outgunned; Covenant kill ratios tend to top four to one in ship-to-ship combat.</strong></em><em><strong>By November of 2535, virtually all of the Outer Colony worlds had been destroyed by the Covenant. The &#8220;Cole Protocol&#8221; was established by military order: All human vessels must ensure that Covenant forces do not find Earth. Human ships—when forced to withdraw—must not travel on an Earth-bound vector, even if that requires jumping into Slipspace without proper navigational calculations.</strong></em><em><strong>If blind jumps are not possible, the ship&#8217;s captain must order self-destruction if capture is imminent. In addition, it is also imperative that the powerful ship AI data cores not fall into Covenant hands, so part of this protocol involved either the removal or destruction of the ship&#8217;s AI in extreme situations. </strong></em> </dd>

<dd><em><strong>Covenant forces swarmed into the Inner Colonies. For several years the war fell into a pattern: humans emerged victorious from isolated battles—typically during ground operations—but at a horrible cost. In space combat, the humans lost at a precipitous rate, and one by one, the colonies fell.</strong></em> </dd>

The battered cruiser, the Pillar of Autumn, fled the devastation, carrying with it the sole surviving SPARTAN. The SPARTANs—an elite unit of supercommandoes, equipped with the fearsome MJOLNIR assault armor—were created as the ultimate soldiers.</strong></em><em><strong>Now, only one SPARTAN remains to carry the fight to the enemy. In accordance with the Cole Protocol, Captain Jacob Keyes—the Autumn&#8217;s commanding officer—plotted a random, long-distance jump, hoping to lure the Covenant fleet away from Earth.</strong></em><em><strong>After deactivating the drive, the Autumn dropped into a distant, uncharted system. There was a Covenant fleet in the system as well, near a planet-sized ring-shaped construct, &#8220;Halo.&#8221; </strong></em> </dd>

<p><em><strong>Halo Wars is a real-time action strategy game for the Xbox 360 that allows the player to control large armies and to shrewdly direct them in realistic warfare. Set early in the iconic war between the Covenant and UNSC - made famous by the Halo FPS games - Halo Wars provides a new angle on the war while bringing new heroes to the battle.<br />

<p><em><strong>In Halo Wars fans will be able to control armies of units that are familiar to them from the FPS games, such as UNSC Marines, Scorpion Tanks, and the iconic Warthog. <p><em><strong>We&#8217;ve spent a great deal of time simply on getting the controls right.  <span id="ctl00_ctl00_bcr_faqContentPart">Halo Wars was created for the Xbox 360 from the ground up, which meant we didn&#8217;t have to make compromises or shoe-horn in artifacts from a Windows PC game. We were able to take all the best aspects of RTS games, make them work perfectly on the Xbox 360, and exclude the rest.</span><br />

<p><em><strong>Halo Wars is currently under development at Ensemble Studios in Dallas, Texas. We are the developers behind the award winning Age of Empires series of real-time strategy games, and we&#8217;re very excited to be able to work in the universe that our friends at Bungie have created. </strong></em></p>
